Dr. Kathleen Hefner completed her veterinary training at the prestigious Cornell University, receiving her degree of doctor of veterinary medicine (DVM) with honors in 1985. Her undergraduate degree in animal science was conferred by the NYS College of Agriculture and Life Science at Cornell with honors and distinction in 1979. She completed her master’s degree in Animal Nutrition and Biochemistry also from Cornell in 1983. Upon graduation, Dr. Hefner completed a post graduate intensive small animal medicine and surgery internship at Michigan State University.
After 15 years of practice as an associate veterinarian at several prominent Bergen County animal hospitals, Dr. Hefner founded “Animal House to House Calls” a successful house call practice that served Bergen, Passaic, Essex and Hudson counties in New Jersey and Rockland and Westchester counties in New York. To provide more comprehensive service to her clients, the practice evolved with the founding of the Animal Hospital of Saddle River in 2002, where she serves as veterinarian and hospital director. Dr. Hefner strives to provide state of the art individualized veterinary care with the insight and congruity only possible with a close relationship between veterinarian, your pet and you, their owner. She strives to provide the highest quality, compassionate care for your pet in a friendly and comfortable setting.
Dr. Hefner has special interest in preventive/wellness healthcare, especially pediatrics and senior care as well as internal medicine including endocrinology, metabolic disease and infection/zoonotic disease. She has particular interest in the incorporation of nutritional management of disease and preventive health care.
Dr. Hefner is a member of the American Veterinary Medical Association, New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association and served three consecutive terms as president of the Northern New Jersey Veterinary Medical Association. Dr. Hefner serves as Executive board member and medical advisor of the Onyx & Breezy Foundation, a non-profit 100% volunteer animal health and welfare organization. She is also an avid supporter of Ramapo Bergen Animal Refuge Inc., The Last Resort animal rescue and sanctuary, Companion Animal Advocates as well as the local police benevolent and fire associations.
